Today's Battle: CANNED GREENBEANS!

ONE CAN A CUT ABOVE ?

Today I’m comparing canned green beans..is there a difference and is it worth the price?

I purchased three cans at my neighborhood Walmart..Libbys (.78), Del Monte (1.14) and Walmart store brand, Great Value (.50)

WHAT I SAW…

The first thing i notice is that Libby’s is the only one without a pop top can, making me confront that drawer that holds my weird kitchen gadgets (shrimp peeler, corn shaped cob spears, little plastic soft boiled egg holders). But I did find a quarter in there so ..cha ching!

But whats up Libby’s? Even the store brand has a pop top.

When I open the cans, Libby’s and Great Value look very similar….Sludge green and plumpish beans. The Del Monte beans, while still that sludgy green bean color, are longer, thinner beans.

LIBBYS LIBBYS LIBBYS ON THE LABEL LABEL LABEL

The taste of Libby’s beans immediately reminded me of the green beans I remember being served on a beige plastic compartmentalized plate by my elementary school cafeteria.

The beans are kinda mooshy, like canned green beans seem to be. Not a lot of fresh green bean flavor here, but that seems par for the course with canned green beans. There is a slightly sour or canned taste..not a terrible flavor necessarily…but present.

WALMART'S ENTRY

Walmart’s store brand, Great Value, is by far the most inexpensive can in today’s contest, weighing in at 50 cents a can. GV is similar to the Del Monte beans, except mooshier and even more of that kinda odd sour taste. I actually looked to see if there was a small amount of vinegar in the ingredients… Nope. Green beans, salt and water, same as the other cans. I’m kinda undecided on if more of that flavor is a good thing or not..but the more mooshy-ness definitely is not.

AND FINALLY…

In my opinion..these green beans are the best of the three. The least mooshy , a smoother , warmer taste, and none of the questionable sour-ish / can-ish taste I found in the other two. Although, some of the better flavor may be due to the higher salt content of these beans. I like salt.

It’s also the one of the three opened cans that I’m eating like french fries (mmm french fries) as I type this.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Del Monte wins this one easily.

BUT….. here’s the thing..Del Monte is the best, but its also much more expensive than the other brands : 46 per cent more than Libby’s and more than double the price of Great Value.

And in the end, you’re still just getting canned green beans. None of them taste close to fresh, and I’m guessing there will be no rave reviews from the family with any canned green beans. No “WOOHOO! Del Monte green beans!” Same as no “AWW! not Great Value again”, So I probably wont be spending extra for the Del Monte beans.

I might, however, spend a little extra to buy the Libby’s over the Great Value..cuz..you know …mooshy-ness.
